Red Right Hand is almost perfect, but I hesitate in saying it's one of my favourites because it's been so overplayed in the mainstream. Not that anything Nick Cave ever does can truly be described as "mainstream."

Into My Arms is great. Actually, The Boatman's Call might be my favourite Nick Cave 'n' Seeds album. I especially like (Are You) The One That I've Been Waiting For?

He did a "Scream 3" version that was pretty good. It played around with ambient sounds and really rounded out some awkward places (if that song could be said to really have any.) I actually prefer that version to the original. Heresy, I know.

Not my favourite - that title would have to go to "The Mercy Seat" and "Do You Love Me?", though it was the very first track of Cave's I heard so it will always be special. I have more than a couple favorites - which are yours?

I adore Do You Love Me?. An amazing song.

Everyone talks about The Mercy Seat but I've never heard it. I would have bought the album with it on by now, but the problem is that I've pretty much switched to vinyl and the store I go to is pretty dry on Cave at the moment. The one they do have is pretty expensive.

What made you switch to vinyl?

I was interested in people talking about the difference in sound, and it's true, to me. The sound is different, the look of the turntable is different: I like big, exaggerated things, so I totally dig the look of the thing. And the sound is more real, more there, almost. I find myself actually sitting there, listening to music to hear it, and watching the machinery go around. Rather than just having it on while I do something else.

I never thought about vinyl like that. My sister has a turntable, but I never thought about it being that kind of experience. How expensive has the change been, from CDs to vinyl?

Vinyls range from more expensive than a common new retail CD to much less. Then again, both kinds vary a lot in second-hand stores. It depends on the condition of the record. Be careful if you buy vinyl because sometimes if you buy a second-hand record where they quality hasn't been marked on it, it can be very scratchy.

As for the turntables themselves, I wouldn't recommend buying a pristine new one. I'd say a new one would be about 250 US dollars. That's 500 over here. I got mine, which is from the 60's and works fantastic, for 150 NZ, which'd be about 75 US, I think. Try vintage stores if you ever get one. If they don't have one they can probably get one, they're used to getting hold of those things. Ask to try it out in the store, though, because of the age of the thing.
