The Cabinet of Curiosities, by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child. I first read this book years and years ago, but it's still one of my absolute favourites. Set in New York City -- specifically, the Museum of Natural History -- it's a mystery/thriller with a little bit of the supernatural thrown in for good measure. Cabinets of curiosities were the early forerunners of modern museums; they were the repositories for the natural and the profane, containing everything from geological samples to skeletons of conjoined twins. Preston and Child's novel is like a cabinet in itself: it's got a little bit of everything. I absolutely recommend it.

"Sao Paolo", by the Guillemots might just be my favourite song in all the world, ever. This was the anthem for my last semester of undergraduate work. I was hanging on for six more required credits and I had moved out of the house off-campus and into this gorgeous dormitory seated at the fringe of the quad. The rooms were like cloister cells, but they had these incredible beveled glass windows -- done cathedral style -- and the common room was like something out of a German prince's castle. I listened to this song constantly. To me, it's a perfect theme for autumn; there's something ghosty about it, a little melancholy, and a lot passionate. Plus, it's like, eleven minutes long. I love it.
