Hugh Laurie seems very genuine. I think that's part of his appeal: he plays this character that's absolutely irascible, but then he goes home and apologizes to his appliances for leaving them alone in the apartment all day. (Or something like that; I'm guesstimating.)
I'm not sure what brand of ice cream maker we used, but it was a fairly inexpensive one. And it's really cheap to make good, homemade ice cream. You just need a bag of ice, the ice cream mix, and some rock salt. I'm sure there are recipes online that tell you how to make it yourself, without the aid of an ice cream maker. Let me ask my folks what brand of maker they use. I'll be sure to give you a couple of different options.
