But I'm dubious, because I keep hearing that the current season is so convoluted that you practically have to keep a notebook to track what's going on

People who say that are exaggerating. Or they're just not paying close enough attention to what's happening on the show. Or quantum physics doesn't wrap around their brain very well. Or all three. Don't listen to them and don't let what others say put you off! Lost is a very detail-heavy show, where every single little detail matters and means something somewhere in the plot. If you miss a detail or several, then yes - things get confusing. I'm up to season five now; if you pay close attention to everything that happens throughout the show leading up to S5, then what happens in season five, while undoubtedly mindfucky, slots into place and makes perfect sense and is consistent with the show's entire plot.

On another note: I've been MIA from rp'ing because of having to prioritise a few things, but now things are settling down again - I'm so sorely tempted to open up a multifandom game with a Lost premise. You know, multifandom characters on Oceanic 815, crash lands on the island with the other Lost characters, issues of faith and survival and relationships are tested...

Nnnyaagh someone half-heartedly talk me out of it, quick!
