Wherever you are, whatever faith guides you, whatever language you speak and whatever path you take, may this holiday season be filled with love and happiness for you and yours.

I just got an e-mail from the TESOL convention people, telling me that I did not get the travel grant award I applied for back in October. It would have covered the cost of registration plus something like a grand in other extraneous expenses. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed, but some things just aren't meant to be. My parents gave me $350 as a graduation present (which, conveniently, is the total cost of registration for the conference) but I might end up using it to pay bills this next month, as there will be no further financial aid checks to rely on. I'm actually okay with that. I mean, if I am meant to go to the conference then I will find a way to go to the conference. Right now, being in limbo as I am, things are tight and it's tough to see that far down the road. I remain optimistic, though. I have a meeting tomorrow which might open up some doors to jobs in the area. I'm not going to give up or get discouraged; plenty of grad students before me have gone through this exact thing, and in addition to having a terrific support system (Todd, my family, and my friends are amazing), I think I'm a pretty tough cookie. I can be incredibly persistent when going after something I want. It's going to take work, but I can't just sit on the sidelines and expect things to happen on their own. I've got to be pro-active about my future; got to go out there and make it happen for myself.

That being said, I wanted to take another opportunity to thank all of you for your support, good wishes, and presence over the last few months (and, for some of you, years). I know that I say I'll be all right on my own, and that most of the time I'm pretty insular when it comes to reaching out for help, but I can honestly say that there were times when I didn't know if I could do it on my own. Your words of support and your thoughts meant a lot to me during those moments. I was made stronger through your friendship. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

In my time off, I've been baking quite a bit. My mom and I have been experimenting with cookie recipes, to great success. I've made two batches of reindeer Oreo cookies in the last few days:

And if anyone would like the recipe, it's under this cut )

That's okay; we're all stories in the end. )

So I'm stressing out about finals week, biting my nails down to the quick and entertaining the idea of saying "screw it all" in favour of a jaunt on a lobster boat in New England, but none of that really matters, because

That's right, I bit the bullet and ordered tickets to the Clapton/Daltrey show in July. I figured that, since I won't be able to take a formal vacation this summer, I owed myself at least one wild, bank-breaking expenditure that wouldn't take me too far from home. And the cherry on the sundae? [livejournal.com profile] another_myself will be my concert buddy! She's coming up to visit that weekend and I expect that there will be much debauchery. (Or, at the very least, some beer and impromptu dance parties.)

I'm finessing my schedule for the fall semester -- my final semester, if everything goes according to plan. I have two credit hours reserved for teaching, but the other seven are up to me. I'm torn between taking First Semester Hebrew and a strange cipher of a class called Beats & Hippies. Your guess is as good as mine.

Happy Birthday to the extraordinary [livejournal.com profile] austen!

Live it up like a Derrick Storm launch party, bb!

Todd and I went to see "The Ghost Writer" last night and it was incredible. A very taut, well-written, well-acted film. There were a couple of instances where both Todd and I could tell that some expletives were dubbed over in post-production to give the movie its PG-13 rating but, overall, such flubs didn't take away from any of the high caliber performances. Pierce Brosnan, Olivia Williams, hell, even Kim Cattrall made me momentarily forgetful of her role in Sex and the City and pulled off an incredible, true-to-form performance in the role of Amelia Bly, Pierce Brosnan's character's icy assistant. And, honestly: what can't be said about Ewan McGregor? I've got a soft spot for movies/television shows about writers anyway, and he gave a very earnest performance here. The film itself is very recognizably Polanski: the slow build-up, the implantation of seemingly innocuous characters, the neat and orderly cinematography. It was a beautifully-shot film. Very textured and colourful. This was the first time Todd and I had been to the movies since we saw "Avatar" last year, so I am glad that we picked a winner.

Tangental thought processes notwithstanding, [livejournal.com profile] awesomesquared wrote UW Cate/Liv fic. EEEEE. That brings back so many good memories of that game. Cate was -- and continues to be -- one of my strongest, most prolific muses. (Along with Crispin who, oddly enough, has been poking his sharpish nose into my consciousness more and more often lately. I think he's upset at me for having neglected him for so long.) Anyway, it's hard to believe that that game is long gone; 'even harder to believe that it lasted as long as it did. I made some great friends during those years, many of whom I still look up to as writers and am lucky enough to still count as great friends. ♥♥♥♥♥

'Have a bit of reading to do before class tonight and I should hit the library later this afternoon to print off the materials we'll be going over as a group. I finished Beloved this weekend and I have not yet committed to an opinion of it. I'm sure I'll have one before the end of class.

Happy Birthday, [livejournal.com profile] another_myself!

It's an honour, a privilege, and a great squealing, fan-girly joy to be your best friend.
I am so proud of you. May this year bring you all that you hope for and all that you deserve.

Pick up the first part of your birthday present
